Experience in the Use of Data for Parliamentary Platforms in Support of SDG 2

The commitment seeks to strengthen the use of official data on agriculture and food security, where gaps remain between the production of statistical information and its use in decision-making. Although countries generate a significant volume of data, these data are not always accessible, comparable, or used to monitor programs, identify needs, and assess results, particularly in the legislative sphere. In addition, challenges remain in integrating different sources of information and developing the capacity to analyze and interpret data.
Addressing these gaps will enable the more systematic use of statistical information to guide action, track progress in the agri-food sector, and support the development of relevant legislation through platforms such as the FPH-ALC.
Parliamentarians who are members of the Parliamentary Front Against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean (FPH-ALC), as well as their technical teams, often face difficulties accessing and using official data on agriculture and food security, as information is not always available in an accessible, understandable format tailored to their needs. As a result, the use of evidence in legislative processes and the monitoring of public policies remains limited.
The commitment will strengthen capacities to use official data on agriculture and food security through collaboration with the FPH-ALC at the regional level and in coordination with its various national chapters. This work will be carried out in coordination with its Technical Secretariat, hosted by FAO’s Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, through the Spain-FAO Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean.
As part of this initiative, training activities will be developed for parliamentarians and legislative advisers on the use and interpretation of official data for the analysis and monitoring of agri-food issues. A practical guide will also be developed, bringing together tools, recommendations, and examples to facilitate the use of data in parliamentary work.
The initiative is expected to contribute to greater use of official statistical information in the analysis, deliberation, and monitoring of initiatives related to agriculture and food security.
Progress will be monitored through quarterly meetings, with updates subsequently shared with the network established for this working group.
